ARC England and Course Beetle: Upcoming workshops

ARC England are excited to be collaborating once again with Course Beetle to present the following courses, with a specially negotiated discount for all ARC members:-

Makaton Safeguarding Workshop

The Makaton Language Programme is widely known and used within organisations to support the communication of individuals accessing services. Now there is an additional, specialist Makaton Training Workshop available; The Makaton Safeguarding Workshop. This is a 2 day, specialist workshop which is designed for individuals and organisations who seek to take the application of Makaton to a new level. The course provides step by step guidance about implementing Makaton at exactly the right level for each individual user, and also explores action planning and prioritization from a safeguarding perspective.

Enabling Environments for Communication

This is a highly practical day workshop to help organisations and individuals make the adjustments to communication that people with learning disability and/or autism are entitled to expect in order that they experience relationships and environments that facilitate understanding and expression. A significant number of people with learning disabilities have some difficulties with speaking, listening, concentrating or understanding. While all good service providers prioritise respectful communication, many practitioners report that it is hard to know exactly what they can do to help their service users communicate better. This course presents an inspiring range of techniques and ideas including an introduction to the way care providers have made use of tablet devices to better meet the needs of people who love to communicate but struggle to express themselves.

Bookings are currently being taken for:

Date: Monday 13th February 9.30 – 4.00pm
Venue: The Loft, c/o Taste of Shrewsbury, 70, Mardol, Shrewsbury SY1 1PZ

The course will cover:

All of the course topics are geared to practical ways practitioners and organisations can help promote better communication:

  • How to identify whether a service user has potential for improved expression
  • Techniques for talk: how the language used by carers impacts on communication, and how a few simple adjustments can change everything.
  • From low to higher tech. An overview of support approaches that can be offered to match communication need and interest ranging from use of signing right through to the use of affordable tablet devices.
  • What have other organisations done? Hear real stories of how investing in staff training in communication has impacted on the lives of people who have speech, language and communication support needs.

Feedback from previous delegates:

“Useful training session which gives an understanding of the communication needs of adults with learning disabilities and ideas of how to help meet their needs.”
