Does anyone know if there is a difference between the term Profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and Complex and Multiple Learning Needs (CMLN)? Thanks
Not really. We started using CMLN in Leeds special schools when a group of teachers did a block of CPD on meeting the needs of this group of learners to develop policy and practice around personalised learning plans that started where the student was rather than fitting them into a curriculum. Some teachers felt that at that time - nearly 10 years ago, that their senior leaders thought to have PMLD you needed to be in a wheelchair and so a whole cohort of students would miss out on the opportunities this approach would bring in terms of access to appropriate learning opportunities based on individual engagement and we have stuck with it
Thanks Sarah, I have never seen PMLD as children being in wheelchairs. But as long as the terms are essentially the same then that’s fine. x
