Healthy eating and education

I am looking for some current statistics/examples for issues around adults with learning disabilities and the provision/need for education around healthy eating and learning to cook, with a view to starting workshops.

ASDAN has a module within the Focus programme that would be appropriate for adults with learning disabilities called Meal Preparation and Cooking that might be of interest.

Hi!
Here are some extracts from our Core Case for Support with links/reference to the resource sources. Hope it helps. Always worth seeing what stats are available for you locally through your CCG. You may find useful information from the Clinical Reference Group for Learning Disability - your council or CCG will be able to direct you. Good luck!

About 1 in 5 pwld who are over the age of 65 will develop dementia, and onset will be earlier than for the general population. One third of people with Down’s syndrome develop dementia in their 50s. (Alzheimer’s Society).

In 2012, the Department of Health’s Adult Social Care Outcomes Framework found that 7% of adults with learning disabilities were in some form of paid employment, mostly part-time work. It is estimated that 65% of people with learning disabilities would like a paid job. Numbers are dropping and the 2015 figure for people with learning disabilities in work had dropped to under 6%.
Emmerson et al (People with Learning Difficulties in England 2011, IHAL 2012-04) found that most people in work were working fewer than 30 hours per week. Of particular concern is the decline in numbers of people in paid or voluntary work highlighted in this study. Across London, the percentage of learning disabled people in work dropped from 9.8% in 2008/09 to 8.7% in 2010/11, and in 2015 was down to 7.5%.

The Public Health England Learning Disabilities Observatory published some guidance last year that might be of help. The guidance is for public health staff commissioning or running weight management services and other mainstream health professionals working to support people to lose weight. It is also for family carers, social care staff and learning disabilities professionals. It advises about specific aspects of weight management for people with learning disabilities.

It can be found at www.improvinghealthandlives.org.uk/gsf.php5?f=314268

Thanks so much Anna, another person had also put this down as a link but it crashed, so pleased to read it. Will definitely be able to use this to support applications to get the workshops to be a reality. Looking at adults with learning disabilities to engage in fun cookery workshops or other hot topics, the emphasis need’s to be tangible, fun and interesting and initially run in the holidays. We have found that the LD courses locally are run an academic term only and so their are lots of bored people during the school holidays. This has created an opening for developing services to continue throughout the whole year, but needs to have a focus around the need for the individuals who we want to attend, addressing the subject of health, diet and lifestyle and how this is complex when many factors are involved when running new initiatives, which this document highlights on so many levels.
Thank you for your help!

Thank you for sending this over, looks an interesting resource.

Thank you for sending over the links and stats. The improving health and lives link crashed and says page not found. Please could you try sending it over again?
Many thanks

Hi

Glad it will be of help. That’s a good idea to do something in the holidays. Hope it goes well.

Best wishes
