Understanding belonging for people with profound intellectual disabilities

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2021/22 Academic Year.

This PhD project enables a suitably qualified and experienced applicant to undertake a critical exploration of belonging and identity for young people with profound intellectual disabilities. The doctoral researcher will work directly with one or more profoundly intellectually disabled person (and those close to them). They will develop creative, social research methods to explore the connective value of belonging and identity work and develop knowledge that has potential to drive innovation in how such young people interact with education, healthcare, research, social care, the arts and community life. Their work should have potential to impact on learning and well-being.

Skills Required

Excellent interpersonal skills in relating to young people with profound intellectual disabilities; ability to work non-verbally to build rapport and generate data; skill in handling complex concepts (belonging, identity) and applying them in new practical and theoretical spheres.

Funding

South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax free) of £15285 (2020/21 UKRI rate), plus payment of programme fees. Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).

Funding is provided for 3 years full-time PhD study (pro-rata for part-time students). Applications for 1+3 funding for students completing a Master’s year prior to the commencement of PhD study are also welcome (details available at www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
