Call for Participants: A research study to understand gambling behaviour among people with learning disabilities from a supporters’ perspective

Hi all

My name is Chloe Francis, I am a PhD researcher at the University of Wolverhampton. I have received funding from GambleAware to undertake a research project looking at experiences of gambling among people with learning disabilities.

I am writing to ask whether you or anyone you know fit the recruitment criteria and would like to take part. I am looking to interview carers and supporters of people with learning disabilities, about gambling behaviour and gambling-related harm among people with learning disabilities.

This is because we are interested in learning more about how gambling participation fits into the lives of people with learning disabilities. The research also aims to better understand ways in which people with learning disabilities may be exposed to a greater risk of harm from gambling, and what can be done to reduce those risks. The interview can be completed either in-person, or online (through Microsoft Teams or Zoom), depending on the individuals’ preference and location.

We are looking to speak to individuals who meet one of these criteria:

  • Care for or support an adult family member or friend with a learning disability or borderline learning disability (who has participated in gambling)
  • Are a paid carer for an adult with a learning disability or borderline learning disability (who has participated in gambling)
  • Are employed in another role that involves supporting people with learning disabilities, at least one of whom is an adult who has participated in gambling

Participants must also be over the age of 18, and live in England.

Each participant will receive a £15 gift voucher as a thank you for their time.

I have attached a participant information sheet for the study, and would be very grateful if you could pass this on to anybody who you think would be a good fit for the research. The information sheet explains what is involved in the study, and tells people how to contact me if they would like to take part.

It would be great to hear from you if you are interested and able to support with recruitment for this research, I can be contacted at c.e.francis@wlv.ac.uk.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Chloe Francis

Hello all,

I am still recruiting participants for this study so if you are wondering whether you may be eligible to take part, please do get in touch. I’d love to hear from you!

Hi Cloe

I did see your research study but despite working with adults with learning disabilities for many years I have not really worked with anyone that has gambled to any extent. One man that is not supported by us anymore, did go to Brighton on the train and spent his money on slot machines but that is all.

Hi Chloe

Have you submitted anything to LD England for their weekly newsletter. May be a way to get this out to a wider audience. Contact Anna Balding at anna.balding@ldengland.org.uk if it would be helpful. She manages the newsletter.
